Wall Street’s Charging Bull is not the center of attention any longer; make way for Fearless Girl.
Cast in bronze, Fearless Girl is a 50-inch high statue of a petite but defiant girl that stands opposite the Charging Bull, in honor of International Woman’s Day. Her pose is an empowering symbol to promote more women leadership roles in the workplace.
Fearless Girl stands tall, wearing a dress, her hands on her hips, a tilt and angle in her stance, which exuberates confidence and power. This underdog is a universal image for women of all ages to inspire future leaders of tomorrow.
The sculptor, Kristen Visbal, has been working with the McCann Company on this empowering campaign since December of last year. State Street Global Advisors pushed the campaign message out to 3,500 companies to encourage hiring more women in top positions. Over 15 percent of women hold board positions in the United States, however, only four percent are CEOs. It has been found that companies following this gender diverse policy generate higher stock returns and increased corporate performance.
Public figures Letitia James and actress Jessica Chastain want a permanent display for the Fearless Girl and her message of needed change. “Fearless Girl stands as a powerful beacon, showing women – young and old – that no dream is too big and no ceiling is too high,” James said. City Hall has already extended Fearless Girl’s reign from one week to an entire month. A growing petition has been initiated for permanent installation and has received over 19,000 supporting signatures out of the 25,000 needed before she becomes everlasting.
Fearless Girl stands proud making a difference. She was scheduled to be removed on April 2 and the Italian artist who designed the charging bull wants her removed because he says she is diluting the bull's message. But still she has remained and is fighting for her mark in history to remain fearless where she stands.
