Dinner at 1274 meters

An Easter dinner at 1274 meters that celebrated sustainability

Clean energy company Fortum and Magnus Nilsson, chef of Fäviken Magasinet, opened a pop-up restaurant in Åre, Sweden for Easter. “Kabin 1274” served three seatings in the Kabinbana gondola lift for 24 guests who had arrived at the ski resort in a sustainable manner.

Åre, one of the leading Scandinavian ski resorts, set the stage for a once in a lifetime dinner in the sky.

Over three evenings 24 guests were hoisted to the top of the mountain in order to enjoy a meal that celebrated sustainability and the commitment each diner had made for a cleaner future. Each plate was prepared and served at the top station, then enjoyed in the legendary lift high above the ground as the spring sun set lighting the valley at the base of the mountains.

Clean energy company Fortum and the Swedish double Michelin star chef Magnus Nilsson collaborated and opened a pop-up restaurant “Kabin 1274” to the Åre Kabinbanan gondola lift.

Named after the peak height of the Åre Kabinbanan lift (1274 metres), “Kabin 1274” only served three seatings. The seats could be won exclusively through a giveaway, and to participate, Easter vacationers had to arrive to Åre in a sustainable manner, such as by train or with an electric vehicle.

The menu of each evening was prepared by Magnus Nilsson and his team. The dinner guests were served a unique mix of locally sourced Nordic dishes, such as scallops cooked with birch coal and juniper branches as well as king crab with almost burnt cream.

“It was more than I could ever expect, something totally unique, entirely dreamlike. We have ridden the gondola lift our whole lives and never thought we would experience it in this way! It was like a fantastic work of art,” says Monica, who was one of the lucky winners to receive an invitation to the dinner.

Magnus Nilsson, the chef of the evening, is best known for his work as the head chef in the world-famous restaurant Fäviken Magasinet, situated 25 km east of Åre.

“The purpose of this event was to point out one of the real issues with our sustainability work as a business, how people actually get to our restaurant. By carrying out these three dinners together with Fortum, we wanted to reward those who have made an active choice in how to get to Åre in a sustainable way”

Clean energy company Fortum has been a partner of Åre for several years. Fortum powers three of the main ski lifts with fossil free solar power and serves Åre customers with 40 Fortum Charge & Drive EV charging points. Joining forces with Magnus Nilsson was a natural choice.

“It felt natural to do something special in Åre with its beautiful nature and fantastic views. Without a doubt the best views you get are from the gondola, so why not turn it into a restaurant that celebrates sustainability,” explains Fortum’s Brand Manager, Jussi Mälkiä.

“With this event we hope everybody would challenge themselves to think about what they can do in their own lives to lower their impact on the climate. It doesn’t have to mean that life becomes more complicated, the sustainable choices can in fact improve the quality of life in many ways. We encourage everyone to act for a cleaner future,” Mälkiä continues.
