Dr. Vivian B. Valenty, creator, founder and president of VB Cosmetics, Inc.
What did you do?
I created a business around Dazzle Dry, an award-winning clean nail polish that dries in five minutes without the use of UV light or chemically reactive ingredients, wears chip-free for 7 to 14 days and then comes off with regular polish remover.
How did you do it?
As a bioorganic chemist, I have spent my career designing products that solve problems. For me, creating a healthier alternative for performance polish was something that I was truly passionate about.
When did you start your company?
I left the big corporate world in 1990 to start building my own company. In 1993, I created VB Cosmetics, the parent company of Dazzle Dry.
Why are you innovating with this product or service?
I wanted to create a healthy solution to nail care. The problem with traditional polishes is that they dry too slowly and chip too quickly. Then there’s artificial nail enhancements like acrylics and UV gels, which deliver advanced performance but at an unhealthy cost: nail damage, skin-sensitizing reactive ingredients, repeated UV-A exposure and abrasive removal.
However, Dazzle Dry is in a class of its own. It’s the only nail polish created as a system that allows nails to grow strong and healthy naturally. I formulated the system to dry within five minutes, stay on natural nails for up to two weeks and be gently removed with regular nail polish removers.
Where are you from?
I was born in the Philippines towards the end of WWII when food was scarce and pharmaceuticals were non-existent. My parents who were school teachers brought me to school at an early age which resulted in my going to college at 14 and graduating from college with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at age 19. I made it my goal to come to the US and pursue a graduate degree in organic chemistry, and I credit the Ford Foundation for giving me a one-way airline ticket to make it happen. I presently live in Chandler, Arizona, just a mile and a half from Dazzle Dry’s headquarters.
