WHO are you?
My name is Jacqueline Shaw, Founder of Wax+Wraps the African Print Subscription Box company. My profession is Fashion Designer working for international brands and high street retailers for nearly 20 years.
WHAT did you do?
My company provides sewers, hobbyists, and crafters with an opportunity to take control of their own wardrobe through making their own clothes with our monthly supplies of African print / Wax print fabrics, sewing patterns and notions.
HOW did you do it?
We provide boxes with a choice of fabrics that have been handprinted by artisans in Africa. A sewing pattern is sent in the box each month to help our subscribers and customers make key items for their wardrobe. With monthly unboxing videos on YouTube, also headwrap tutorials and sewing videos, a Facebook sewing group community, plus fabric showcases on Instagram, we provide our monthly, bimonthly or gift box subscribers with the sewing kit to create their own wardrobe
WHEN did you start your company?
Wax+Wraps started in 2020 during the global pandemic as an answer to many questions for many. It gave crafters and sewers a way out of the boredom of lockdown plus it supported my own family as unemployment in my profession of fashion design was at a high with retailers closing. I was jobless and needing a solution that worked for all which also gave me a monthly income.
WHY are you innovating with this product or service?
The product also sits alongside a training service i created called WAXBIB. I have run membership-based business before starting Wax+Wraps and recognized that subscription business models could be a great business solution for many facing unemployment. Now running my third cohort of WAXBiB and a fourth cohort starting in April I've helped 40 people train and go on to start and launch their own subscription box business that also gives back to Africa.
